Minister of Education, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has disclosed that the government has awarded a total of 822 contracts for various infrastructure projects in Senior High Schools across the country since it assumed power in 2017.
The Minister disclosed these in Parliament when he responded to a question on the number of senior high schools benefiting from some 804 projects announced by the Ministry.
The government, he said, is determined to improve infrastructure at the secondary level in order to improve access to second cycle education.
He explained that the Ministry is guided by its Strategic Plan to improve equitable access to, and participate in, quality education delivery in the country.
The projects, which range from 3-unit classroom blocks to 3-storey dormitories, include toilet facilities, rehabilitation works on existing infrastructure, and other structures.
The Minister disclosed that 236 of the projects have been completed comprising five 3-unit classroom blocks, 66 six-unit blocks, and one 18-unit classroom block.
The others are 60 single-unit dormitory blocks, 44 toilet facilities, 10 other structures, and five rehabilitated existing infrastructure.
He explained that the current work being done is on a needs basis, especially for schools running the double-track system in order to revert them back to singletrack.
The Minister averred that the government is compelled to prioritize the allocation of the projects to certain schools because they are usually oversubscribed leading to the number of students outstripping the infrastructure.
According to him, this is the same criteria that have led to making over 300 SHSs double-track because they were oversubscribed hence the reason why some schools get priority in providing the projects.
Mr. Opoku Prempeh explained there is no specific date for the completion of the remaining projects as the construction work is a continuous process.
He averred that these projects would be handed over for use as soon as they are completed while new ones come on stream.
